Removing a broken off cable head from inside a Shimano gear shifter

Tool for removing a broken off cable head from inside a Shimano gear shifter

The rear gear cable on my bike snapped while I was biking on it today. Luckily I had a replacement cable with me, so I thought I could replace it right away. But it turned out that the cable head inside the gear shifter was jammed, and impossible to get access to and remove.

Change Firefox default search engine behaviour in the location bar

Change Firefox default search engine behaviour in the location bar

If you type some keywords in the address bar (also known as location bar) in Firefox and press enter, it will perform a search for these words.

To change search engine, or configure the behaviour, type about:config in the location bar, and search for keyword.URL, update to match your needs.

To use the DuckDuckGo search engine:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=

Use Google, with "I feel lucky" effect, going directly to the best matching result:
http://www.google.dk/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=

Just go to the Google result page:

Install LAMP web server and Drupal 7 in Ubuntu

Install LAMP web server and Drupal 7 in Ubuntu

Installing a web server is very easy in Ubuntu, just enter a few lines in the terminal: There is no need to install and configure each part of a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) installation individually. You can also install other programs this way. The downside is that all components are installed automatically, and not reviewed by you. But as long as you only use the web server locally (localhost or 127.0.0.1), and don't open up for access from the Internet, it should be safe.

Replacing the gear shifting system on a Trek 4100 MTB

Replacing the gear shifting system on a Trek 4100 MTB

The mechanical parts on my Trek 4100 mountainbike were getting old and worn out, so I replaced the bottom bracket, front chainwheel, multiple freewheel, rear derailleur and bike chain.

It isn't that difficult, and the process is a lot of fun! On top of that you save a lot of money, in stead of letting your bicycle repair shop do it.

Installing and recording music with Ubuntu Studio

Installing and recording music with Ubuntu Studio

If you want to record music with the Ubuntu GNU/Linux system, Ubuntu Studio will make the installation of the programs needed much easier, and get you started with just a few clicks. As well as audio programs, video and graphics programs are also part of Ubuntu Studio.

Apart from a computer, the music programs installed with Ubuntu Studio and an instrument, you will need something to interface between your instruments and the computer and an external USB sound card can do just that.

Refretting a Fender Jazz Bass guitar, DIY

Refretting a Fender Jazz Bass guitar, DIY

I just refretted my Fender Jazz Bass and documented the process, in case somebody else out there is also thinking about doing it.

It might initially seem like an impossible task, but if you research the subject (there are loads of stuff on the internet about refretting) and practice on disposable guitar necks before moving on, it really isn't.

Tools for refretting an electric bass or guitar

Tools for refretting an electric bass or guitar

If you want to refret an instrument yourself, you will probably have to invest in some new tools, since some of the tools needed are fairly specialized. Most of them can be bought on the internet or you can make them yourself, to help keep expenses down.

These are the tools I used for my first three refrets -- the price of the professional fretting tool is put in parentheses, after the name of the tool.
